A look behind-the-scenes

The First Amendment Museum at the Gannett House welcomed business people and community members to explore the house during the Kennebec Valley Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2017. While the home is still in the early stages of rehabilitation, visitors could see some of what is going on behind the scaffolding.

Building envelope work currently underway includes window restoration, a complete slate roof restoration, and stucco finish work. Temporary displays illustrated the story of the Gannett family in the community and their connection to the values and freedoms written in the First Amendment. The Maine Press Association Hall of Fame was also on display.

Visitors could contribute their ideas for the project and share experiences related to times when they have encountered the First Amendment in action.

The house will close up for further construction throughout the coming year, but outreach will continue.

The development of a traveling exhibit funded by the Maine Humanities Council and the Maine Community Foundation is still underway and will be available along with prototypes of programs in the coming months.
